Create fun and sustainable architecture to stimulate outdoor community engagement
We started our design firm in a small Providence, RI office on, you guessed it, Benefit Street. We have since moved, morphed, and re-calibrated our process, but always with one goal in mind: design thoughtful and exciting buildings or places. We're still a small firm, yet we cast a wide net with bases on two coasts (we love the internet and cell phones).
Our broad structure allows us to consider an array of client needs, design ideas, and sustainable practices, while our size means our full attention is focused on the work at hand. Overall, we simply enjoy being outdoors and want to leverage our decades of architectural design knowledge to benefit the outdoor recreation community. That is the Benefit we provide.

Seth grew up in Western New York where he was placed on skis at age 3 and spent most of his youth in the woods. Amazingly he decided architecture was his calling and ended up with a Bachelor of Architecture from Roger Williams University (2000) and a Master of Design Studies in Sustainable Design from the Harvard Graduate School of Design (2011). He is a registered architect who has worked predominately in the northeast with BSD, Kao Design Group, Payette Associates, and Fontanese architects. Architectural and master planning projects he has been involved with include: Ski area projects, luxury resort planning, high end residences, laboratories, office buildings. Seth has a passion for sustainable design and is an Assistant Professor of Architecture and Sustainable Design at the University of Hartford where he also does research on Climate Change Adaptation and resilient design. When he's not on the job, Seth spends his time with his wife and son hiking, biking, or skiing.

Rick Casner is an architect and part-time ski instructor or ski instructor and part-time architect depending on how and when you ask. He has taught design at the university level, worked as a ferry pilot delivering airplanes, written ‘jingles’ for radio and thirty-some years ago….started the firm that became Benefit Street Design. He is also married to Lynn who makes any of this make any sense. Now, Rick and his dog Grace divide their time roughly evenly between Tacoma, Washington and Stowe, Vermont. During their long drives back and forth across the country he thinks about stuff.
